Professor Williams is Chair of Medicine at University College London (UCL). In 2023 he was also appointed to the role of Chief Scientific Officer & Chief Medical Officer at the British Heart Foundation (BHF), leading one of the largest funders of cardiovascular research in Europe. He was previously Chairman of the European Council on Hypertension (2016-18), Past-President of the British Hypertension Society (2001-2003) and is immediate Past-President of the International Society of Hypertension (2022 - 2024). Until recently he was Director of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at UCL and Director of Research at UCL Hospitals, securing over £300 million of research funding over 10 years and responsible for oversight and strategy for one of the largest biomedical research portfolios in Europe.\\

He is an internationally renowned leader in the field of hypertension and cardiovascular research. having led many high impact studies that have informed and  changed clinical practice globally.  He has published over 600 scientific papers, cited over 130,000 times and has a H-index over 120. The Clarivate academic list, has repeatedly listed him as one of the most influential clinical scientists in the world. He is a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Science, and an NIHR Senior Investigator (now emeritus) both recognition of his status as a leading UK Scientist. Alongside, in 2023 he was awarded the President’s Medal by the Royal College of Physicians for his "outstanding service to the NHS" and in the UK New Years Honours 2024, he was awarded an OBE by the King for services to medicine.\\

He is an alumnus of Imperial College London, having obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree with first class honours in 1980, followed by his graduation in Medicine in 1983. He completed his clinical and academic training in London, Leicester and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Centre, Denver Colorado,, supported by fellowships from the NIH and the BHF. He completed his post graduate Doctorate in Medicine, awarded with Distinction, at the University of Leicester in 1996 with his thesis : “Glucose regulation of PKC in vascular cells”.\\

He is a frequent invited plenary lecturer for learned societies around the world and has has received numerous awards and honours in recognition of his research. He continues to lead his own research program at UCL, recently with colleagues, securing a translational grant award over £4M  from the UK MRC for work developing a novel PET-tracer for the diagnosis of primary aldosteronism.
