His major research has been focused on high-energy nucleus-nucleus collision. He started this work in Berkeley in the 70s. Then, he moved to Brookhaven National Laboratory by serving the first spokesperson at the AGS heavy-ion program, and then, the first spokesperson of PHENIX experiment at RHIC. At the end of 1996 he returned back to Japan. Since then, he has been engaged to design, construction and operation of the J-PARC accelerator complex in Japan over 15.5 years until 2011. Currently he is a scientific advisor of RIKEN and advises all the particle and nuclear physics accelerator program of Japan.
