!!Shabbar Jaffar - Biography
\\
I am an epidemiologist and a clinical trialist. \\
\\
My research interests are on the prevention and management of high burden chronic conditions in sub-Saharan Africa, focussed primarily on the control of HIV, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. My research is interdisciplinary and is designed to generate evidence to inform health policy and practice. Recently, we showed that integrated management of chronic conditions was an effective and cost-saving approach for health services and plans are now underway to implement this approach in Tanzania and Uganda. This will change how health care is delivered for millions of people in each country. \\
\\
Prior to that, I was involved in research on task-shifting and decentralising HIV management in Uganda, and on the prevention of mortality among people with advanced stage HIV across Africa. These studies also led to changes in health policy and practice, and were pivotal in defining HIV management on the continent. \\
\\
I work with large teams of researchers from multiple disciplines and in close collaboration with policymakers, health care providers, patient and community representatives and other partners. In December 2021, our Group won the Times Higher Education award for the International Partnership of the Year for creating an equitable partnership that led to a step change in research.\\
I am also the Director of the UCL Institute for Global Health, which comprises about 170 staff, conducting research and education in a range of topics in global health.\\ \\[{ALLOW view All}][{ALLOW edit sjaffar}][{ALLOW upload sjaffar}][{ALLOW comment All}]
