Steven A. Goldman is Professor of Neuroscience and Neurology at the University of Copenhagen, where he is Co-Director of its Center for Basic and Translational Neuroscience, and a consultant at Copenhagen University Hospital. He has a secondary appointment at the University of Rochester in the US, where he is the URMC Distinguished Professor and Co-Director of its Center for Translational Neuromedicine. \\

He moved to Copenhagen in 2014 from Rochester, having received the Novo Nordisk Laureate Award from the Novo Nordisk Fondation in Denmark. He was recruited to Copenhagen to establish its new Center in Basic and Translational Neuroscience. \\

Goldman is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, with BA degrees in Biology and Psychology.  He obtained his PhD with Fernando Nottebohm at the Rockefeller University in 1983, and his MD from Cornell in 1984. \\

Goldman interned in Medicine (1984-85) and did his residency in Neurology (1985-88) at New York Hospital-Cornell and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1988, and became a tenured Professor in 1997, at age 39; he is board certified in neurology and neuro-oncology. He moved to Rochester in 2003.\\

Goldman is interested in cell genesis in the adult brain, with a focus on the use of stem and progenitor cells in treating demyelinating and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as in their transformation into cancers. He has published over 200 papers in these fields. He is a recipient of the Jacob Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award of the NIH, and was awarded the 2014 Novo Nordisk Foundation Laureate Award. He has delivered the Presidential lectures of the American Academy of Neurology and American Neurological Association, and has been elected to the Association of American Physicians, American Society for Clinical Investigation, and American Neurological Association. \\

Goldman is an emeritus  chairman of Rochester's Department of Neurology (2008-2012). He has served on over 20 NIH committees, has chaired a number of these, and served on the FDA Cellular, Tissue and Gene Therapy Advisory Committee (2010-2014). His current work is supported by the Novo Nordisk Fondation, NINDS, NIMH, NY Stem Cell Research Board, the Mathers Charitable and Adelson Medical Research Foundations, CHDI, the PML Consortium, and the National MS Society.
