*1987 Awarded the "Prix du meilleur livre étranger" in the essay category for "Madame du Deffand et son monde" (Seuil)
*2003 Awarded the "Prix Saint-Simon" for l'Âge de la conversation"(Gammimard).
*2006 Awarded the “Prix du rayonnement de la langue et de la littérature françaises”, by the Académie Française.
*2016 Member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (2016)
*2017 Cino del Duca World Prize, awarded for the entire body of her work. Awarded each year since 1975, the World Cino Del Duca is awarded to a French-speaking author whose work constitutes, in a scientific or literary expression, a message of modern humanism. It is the second highest endowed world prize in the humanities and social sciences after the Nobel Prize for literature.
