Felix A Aharonian was born in Yerevan, Armenia in the then USSR in 1952.\\
\\
He studied in Moscow and obtained his MSc in 1975 (with distinction) and PhD in 1979 from the Moscow Engineering-Physics Institute (Nuclear and Particle physics).  He was awarded a DSc by the Yerevan Physics Institute (Nuclear and Particle Physics) in 1987.\\

From 1979 to 1991 he was employed in the Yerevan Physics Institute rising to senior scientist and deputy chair of the Institute's science council.  Following the collapse of the USSR in 1991 he spent a year as a visiting scientist in the University of Chicago and subsequently at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany, where he became leader of the high-energy astrophysics group of the astrophysics division.  He then joined the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies as Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics in 2006, but retained strong links to Heidelberg where he was made an "External Scientific Member" of the Institute.\\

He has played a key role in several international scientific collaborations, most notably the H.E.S.S. High-Energy Stereoscopic System of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in Namibia, but also the Japanese X-ray satellite mission Hitomi and the KM3NeT neutrino telescope project.\\ \\
